Nuts and Bolts of Buying a Practice

We are in a very interesting time in our industry where the average age of a financial advisor is 58 years old and the firms of the past aren’t providing the training they once did to bring in the younger generation of advisors. Buying a practice can be a win-win for both the buyer and seller when completed correctly. The concept is simple, but execution isn’t easy. Join Cambridge and Greg Raines, CEO of TAG Advisors, as he discusses what to do and not to do when buying or selling a practice. Greg has been involved in over 20 transactions in the last few years, and he is still actively expanding his firm through acquisitions. In addition, Greg also acts as a consultant for advisors looking for assistance on either side of the transaction.

How to Value your Practice

Succession planning and valuating your practice is a process, not an event. There are many different paths an advisor can take while making a succession plan, each with their own pros and cons. Advisors should also be aware of valuation disconnection, which is a disconnection between what owners think their business is worth, versus what it is actually worth. However, better valuation is possible with preparation, and Tom will go over how to best navigate this process.
